“My husband and I moved to Portland for work just under two years ago. While we had a few friends in the area, none had children, and one of the most stressful aspects of the move was finding schooling and childcare for our then-4-year-old. We fell in love with a local Montessori school — where we saw deer come from the surrounding forest to eat from the school’s gardens! The problem was they didn’t offer on-site aftercare. We visited some of the local daycares that would pick up students from school and were not impressed by the large child size and lack of oversight. We also weren’t ready to consider a nanny because of the cost and lack of trusted sources.

We were at the point of finding a new school when we discovered Binny, a former MSB parent who runs a small childcare setting from her home exclusively for MSB students. She offers the perfect in-between solution: an intimate and structured setting like that provided by a nanny and a group of children to socialize with like a daycare facility. The best part: Binny and all of the children believe in the Montessori practices and continue them in the home. Our son (who has always been active and a bit of a challenge to parent) learned manners, respect and following directions from Binny. (And I think Binny in return learned how to give him appropriate boundaries that gave him freedom with limits.) Binny has lots of activities for the kids, ranging from crafts and outdoor play to trips to the library, park, fountain (weather permitting) and even coordinates with a local yoga instructor to guide the children in a fun, high-impact yoga class on Fridays! It’s clear that she adores the children and that they love her in return!

As a parent, the best part for me has been Binny’s reliability and her feedback. Together we’ve worked through developmental issues like toilet training and some behavior issues where our son was using anger to express himself. She’s truly become a friend and someone I can turn to for advice in addition to providing a fun yet structured care environment.”
